Water Damage From Flooded Basements Can be Costly
There are basically two ways to cleanup flooded basement – the right way and the wrong way. It goes without saying that the right way is the only way to go. You have to know that doing it the wrong way can cause further damage, even death. Water Damage
It’s important to know that you need a lot of equipment to do it correctly. Here are the equipment that you need:
1. Pump
2. Large electric fans
3. Dehumidifier
You need more equipment but these three are the most important. Now, there’s a good chance that you don’t have two of the equipment listed and you probably have large electric fans in your home. You can choose to buy the equipment but you have to know that they can be expensive especially for water damage. Besides, there’s no point in investing in them if you don’t use them regularly.
The Procedure to Clean Up After Water Damage
Just in case you have these equipment, here’s how to cleanup flooded basement the right way:
1. Use the pump to pump out the water out of your basement to prevent more water damage. Now, it’s important to use the right amount of pressure because you wouldn’t want to pump the water too quickly. It’s a good idea to contact a specialist so he can suggest the perfect pressure based on the size of your basement and the amount of water in it.
2. Take out everything that was in the flood. You can’t completely dry a basement if you’re going to leave behind your wet books, appliances and old furniture. Obviously, this can be really dangerous. At the very least, this is a lot of hassle as you’ll need to make a few trips. Take it outside your home and dry whatever you can save. Throw everything that cannot be saved due to water damage.
3. Take out the excess water that wasn’t pumped out. Use a mop to absorb everything.
4. This is when it can get a little testy. The basement may look dry now but it’s really not. Leaving it as it is like an invitation for mold to move in. Direct large electric fans at all areas of the basement and turn on a dehumidifier. This process may take more than a day.
5. It’s time to get down and dirty. Mix a solution of 5 gallons of water mixed with 1 cup of bleach. Scrub everything that was touched by the flood. Be sure to wear protective clothing.
6. Repeat process number 4.
That’s the right way to cleanup flooded basement and it’s understandable if it can be overwhelming. This is why most people choose to just contact a professional to take care of them. They want to save themselves from the dangers and hassles of cleaning up.
